Random Crashing # Job Failed (-12) #5886
Comments
When I remove them from the queue and start over it works, but once it triggers an error in the queue, I can't reset it... Hit and miss |
If you can, run an encode using the default preset, but remove audio, subtitle and filters. If you can run it a few times and see if you still get -12. If the encode works, then can you re-introduce audio, subtitles, then each filter one by one. If it doesn't, I'd recommend checking for a BIOS update for that board. We've been seeing a surprising number of issues on Intel chips of late with a few reports of users having to physically replace the 14900K specifically. Others reporting a BIOS update helps. I'd also make sure it's not throttling too heavily. Those chips do run hot but it should be running ok despite that. |
Does it crash even if you disable the subtitles burn-in? |
I'll experiment and see if it does it for non-burn-in subtitles. I have the latest Bios as of yesterday. So far today, no issues..maybe because its Friday |
It seems to crash no matter what options. It;s totally random. I am going to uninstall and install and see what happens |
Tried nightly build and it crashed with burned subtitles and no subtitles and crashed. I also removed audio and subtle from the job and still crashed # Job Failed (-12) |
I went back to 1.61 and have had no issues. |
Did you try without the filters? |
Update, still crashes on 1.61, it just took longer. I will try the most plane jane settings |
Version 1.7.3 (2024021000) |
Interesting, I have been trying to encode multiple REMUXes, but now I tried with a WEB-DL and its working. I tried the REMUX again, and this time, I stripped out all audio except the 5.1 AC3 track, no subtitles, and stripped metadata; I tried to encode 720p or 1080p with no filters, and it still crashed. |
I have the same problem Starting Encode ...[00:06:27] base preset: H.264 MKV 1080p30 (Modified) [00:08:11] Worker process exited! Job Failed (-12) |
For me, it crashes on ALL REMUXes. And very rarely crashes on WEB-DL. At this point the app is just not useable. It sued to work, but some sort of Windows/Driver update must have messed something up., but always crashes with Subtitles Burned, haven't experimented much about what type of subtitles, but when selecting burn, fails 100% |
I found the cause, I had a voltage offset done on the processor, after doing everything in the BIOS to auto, the problem does not occur. |
Hm..I have already set my bios to default and still same issue ..can you explain details of your voltage offset ?

A bios reset should be sufficient if that was the issue. That said, if it's overvolted it (and some boards do), it may have actually damaged the CPU. We've been seeing a lot of reports of the 139 and 14900Ks being unstable and coincidentally, https://wccftech.com/intel-13th-14th-gen-cpu-gaming-stability-investigated-chips-being-returned-in-korea/ popped up in the news yesterday. We had another user reporting that after having the CPU replaced, the problems went away. I'm wondering if there is maybe a bad batch in circulation, or maybe it's yet another case of mobo makers running the chips too hard and degrading the silicon. Might be worth swapping hardware if that option is available to you. If your capable, down-clocking the CPU to something like 4Ghz and seeing if it's stable might be another interesting test. |
Unlike the other users I'm reading, I have a system with AMD Ryzen 7 3700x with undervolt at 1.22 and CPU core at 4.4 Two weeks ago I encoded a 4K file with undervolt already applied and I didn't have any problems, now I don't understand why both version 1.7.3 and the Nightly version cause these problems With version 1.7.3 I encode with the passthrough to audio option and the High-tier option activated in the additional video options and I have always eliminated the subtitles While with the Nightly version I leave the encoder in the car, audio always passthrough and without subtitles PC configuration Ryzen 7 3700x In the meantime I will try to do a bios and chipset update |
Well if there is an app that I can't test to see if the CPU is bad...or motherboard is bad...but im f it's bad why is Handbrake the only thing it has issues with ? |
Ars has some coverage on this as well. Seems Intel is investigating: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/04/intel-is-investigating-game-crashes-on-top-end-core-i9-desktop-cpus/
Because video encoding is more intensive than gaming and many benchmarks, using all available resources of your CPU more completely, notably SIMD instruction set extensions like AVX where heavy usage often reveals otherwise hidden stability issues. |
I guess I meant to say only encoding application cauing issues ( for me)..stax, Vapor, and the garbage dvd fab don't crash...anyhow I will try to look into the CPU issue , but would be great if there was a good test tonclearly identify the issue |
HandBrake has a very different pipeline to those tools, so it's not actually as direct a comparison as folks thing it is. @Ulisse3000 Don't undervolt and don't overclock if your using HandBrake. An otherwise stable overclock / undervolt can be quite unstable with HandBrake. We see this all the time. In particular, AVX units tend to be very sensitive in the CPU and unless you run something like HandBrake that makes heavy use of them, you won't realise the overclock/undervolt is unstable. CPU's are so damn close to the edge these days that it's just not worth the time/effort to try eek a few % out of them. Beyond that, create your own issue. Provide a log and if possible a sample that reproduces. |
https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/intel-baseline-profile-tested/ Keep an eye out for BIOS updates folks. Looks like ASUS may be rolling out updates. Hopefully it isn't too late as it sounds like the silicon is also degrading / failing for some folks too. |
Try if the new 1.8.0 helps. There is no avoid the truth, it's just that we can't fix what we can't reproduce. |
The tests were all done with the 1.7.3 version AND 1.8.0 unfortunatelly. And the most annoying thing is that you loose all the compression work done within 10 hours, it cannot resume from where it failed. Sorry. |
There are some movies that simply cannot be compressed; the error appears always. On other movies, all is working well. |
Seems to be related to overheating problem; not processor overheat, but SSD/memory overheat inside all the cases. With more RPM of the cases fans, the error dissapears somehow, even if the CPUs reach the same temperatures. Not 100% sure... |
For now, I'm closing this off. As far as I can tell, the bulk of the reports of late have been caused by Intel's shenanigans. Any users of Intel 13th / 14th gen CPUs, please make sure you are running the latest BIOS for your motherboard and make sure your CPU is not in a custom power profile from your motherboard maker. Intel Baseline/Performance modes should be fine. Note, we've had a number of people report having to actually replace the CPU due to degradation so if it's still not stable, you should contact Intel Support. |
