It's a good time to think about Wangscape's logo. As we're closer and closer to releasing GUI version, it would be nice to have an original icon, which can be displayed on title bar and in a "About" window.

For me a good candidate would be an image similar to one from rearranger's tests (that looks like the Microsoft's logo, so it cannot be used in my opinion, but theme is quite accurate):

We also have this (used as the Wangscape organisation's profile picture):
wangscape-icon

Comparing the two possible logos:

  • Terrain tile:
    • Directly expresses Wangscape's purpose (terrain tiles, natural borders, corner alignment).
    • Maybe a bit too direct?
    • Ugly grass texture (water looks OK).
    • Too many different shades of colour.
    • Icon sized (32x32).
  • Jigsaw design:
    • Needs different colours.
    • Simple palette, easy to recolour.
    • Large (100x100, fits in 96x96) and some parts don't scale down well (tile-scaled)
    • Indirectly expresses some of Wangscape's purpose (corner alignment, matching irregular borders).

So, we could make a similar 32x32 jigsaw image with a different colour scheme, or make grass and water textures with a more restricted palette (perhaps using SPARTAN) and substitute them into the terrain tile. Or use terrain textures in a jigsaw design.

Howdy! I'd love to take a whack at designing a logo for Wangscape!

I'm rather new to the GitHub experience, so I hope just dragging and dropping my design will suffice!

I'd be more than happy to make any edits! I used the suggestion @serin-delaunay suggested at the very bottom of his post.

Here is another version using only basic colors!

@WunderWafe hi, thank you for your suggestions :). I really like the first option, I'd go that way. @serin-delaunay what do you think? For me that "ground" tile, top right, could be a bit brighter. What's more I'm wondering whether changing shape a bit wouldn't be more adequate to Wangscape. I mean to make it possible to connect two pieces of logo, so for example make red, green, yellow and blue parts symmetrical. How about that?

@WunderWafe Hi! Thanks for working on this, we really appreciate it. I really like the slight variations in the curves of your jigsaw design, and the terrain textures in the first option. I think @hryniuk makes some good points, but I have a few other requests to make:

  • I think the central quarter of the image should have less rotational symmetry, so that the logo doesn't accidentally look like anything else. Reversing 1 or 2 of the inner tabs would fix the problem.
  • We would need 16x16 and 32x32 versions to use for Windows application icons. @hryniuk I'm not familiar with other platforms' icon requirements; are there any other sizes we would need?
  • Could you provide a license with the image(s)? CC-BY would be ideal for us, but it's up to you. We would need it to be compatible with the project's MIT license.
