Previously (<8.14) in ES|QL mode in Discover, the selected fields would be cleared when modifying the ES|QL query. It seems since 8.14 the selected fields no longer get cleared when modifying the query, leaving the user with fields in the sidebar and columns in the table that may no longer apply to their query:
