Can't do initial setup of AdaFruit ESP32V2 TFT feather

I thought ESPHome would be a much better solution than custom CircuitPython code with MQTT to HA but can't get past the first step.

On Windows and on a Raspberry Pi I've manually installed ESPHome, ran the wizard but when I try
esphome run feather1.yaml
It fails in both environments. I've spent many hours trying to do this through HA and ESPHome command line.

This is what I get on the Raspberry Pi. Do some buttons need to be pressed on the ESP32?

After plugging it in, hold the boot button while you click reset button. Then try flashing it again.

I'm doing this from Home Assistant with the option to install to the device attached to the HA server, a Raspberry Pi 4. It seemed to recognize the port and device.

That isn't failed. You just need to reset it manually for it to start running.

What does "reset it manually mean"?
I've pressed the boot and then reset and also tried pressing reset and then boot. It doesn't show up as "online" and it seems like the install should succeed before it appears "online".
I'm assuming at some point it should say that it succeeded.
It isn't clear why this is so difficult in my case. The various tutorials and Youtube videos just say to plug the ESP32-S2 device into a USB port and click install. Is there something special about AdaFruit devices setup with CircuitPython? Would it help to switch it so it works with the Arduino IDE and try again, assuming this is possible?
I've managed to get a different ESP32-S2 device connected to HA using MQTT and custom CircuitPython code.
This is frustrating for someone accustomed to working with hardware and software.
