Arduino nano esp32 board not supported in EspHome?

I tried to use the "Arduino nano esp32" in the esphome commandline wizard. However the wizard complains that the board "arduino_nano_esp32" does not exist. However, that board name IS listed in the selections as mentioned on the provided link to docs.platformio.org/en/latest/platforms/espressif32.html#boards

My "esphome version" says 2014.2.1

This board is supported in the "latest" Arduino esp32 release V2.0.14

Is there an easy way for me to fix this board missing in EspHome, or is there really some issue with this board?

I have also tried what is suggested in the post you have linked, but I am still getting the error that the board is unknown.

I added the board json file to .esphome/build/<project-name>/boards/ and updated boards.py with a pin mapping for the board name but it still doesn't work. Is there something I am doing wrong here?

Edit: Literally minutes after posting I realized that boards.py had a section under the pin definitions that also needed an entry for the board.

To -finally- get this board working I did:

• Download and copy a 'arduino_nano_esp32.json' into such new '/boards' directory.
• In the 'esphome/components/esp32/boards.py' file, just below the 'BOARDS = {' line, I inserted a few lines:

• In my .yaml file, I describe the board and platform as:

    type: arduino
    version: 2.0.14

This 'version' is newer as the default, and needed to get support for the board. Otherwise there is a complaint about missing pin mapping. Now I can compile and download :-) For example, I added support for the on-board RGB led with lines in my .yaml as:

    name: "Board RGB Led"
    red: boardled_red
    green: boardled_green
    blue: boardled_blue

output:
  - platform: ledc
    pin: GPIO46
    inverted: true
    id: boardled_red

This -mostly- works: in my HomeAssistant I get the RGB led and color selection. At 100% intensity, the colors are roughly OK. Unfortunately, at low intensity the colors turn weird. No idea as of yet how that happens, but isn't very important to me.

You're making this way too complicated. Just use esp32dev. It doesn't matter.

Why does it not matter? What about pin mappings?

GPIO numbers are the same regardless of the board.
