Deserialization not working

I'm trying to deserialize a model using the following code:
this.model.deserializeModel(JSON.parse(template), this.engine);

However it doesn't do anything, nothing seems to happen and the canvas remains empty. To serialize it I'm using the following code:
this.props.model.serialize()

Might be worth mentioning that I am using custom models as well
