Can anybody help me? I'm using Kali 2020 -2 I've tried everything and I can't open rdesktop to connect to windows servers.

root@kali:/etc/X11# rdesktop xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Autoselecting keyboard map 'pt-br' from locale
UI(error): ui_init(), failed to open X11 display:

Presumably you didn't login to X11 as root in the first place -- and being root for this kind of operation is a bad idea anyway. Although you can use xhost to work around this, run rdesktop as the same user that's logged into X11.

I am logged in as Root and trying to use rdesktop to access a windows machine. I'm using kali 2020-3 and I can't seem to get it to work. However in kali 2019 it worked perfectly.

I had this problem when running xfreerdp as root (under Kali Linux).
When running as normal user (without or without sudo), it works perfectly.

Hello,

Could you please show the value of your $DISPLAY environment variable? Or even better, if you could share the whole environment (be careful to suppress possibly sensitive information, though)

If you're running Wayland, beware that you need Xwayland also running to run rdesktop.
