Install step 3 does not populate my test database

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. In MAMP phpMyAdmin created database test (having set the password previously)
2. In http://localhost:8888/install/step2.php? set db info and 'Test DB 
connection' link returns 'connection successful'.
3. In http://localhost:8888/install/step3.php clicked next to run db wizard, 
browser (chrome) goes blank and no tables added to test db

What is the expected output? test db populated with tables
What do you see instead? blank screen and test db empty


What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? etano 1.22 
on Mac OS 10.7.3
