Mostly because why not? It would probably mean more visibility and more developer contributions.

I have no problem with that (and I still have my gitlab GNOME group membership I think), but last I tried to reach out to my old friends in GNOME there wasn't much interest.
Besides, we get a few benefits from being in the stanford-oval org, like free CI services and unlimited org members on the educational plan.

I wouldn't mind a mirror on gitlab, just like I wouldn't mind more visibility of this project and more contributors.
I still think we'll get more traffic on github. It's basically the reverse position as GNOME itself, with their often-debated mirror here.
