Concept ACK, but I think some users prefer the existing behavior; could this behavior be made configurable by a command-line flag?

Yes, I could do that. The --skip-existing flag is OK?

Yes, sounds good to me. rsync uses --ignore-existing instead, but personally I think "skip" is more intuitive than "ignore".
